  • How To Keep Pests Out Of Your Home

No one likes pests in their home.

Unfortunately sometimes when we get rid of pests, such as mice and rodents, their odor can linger.

Clear The Air Odor Eliminators will eliminate those odors easily and safely. Check out our tips to keep pests out of your home:

    Rodents and raccoons:

    • Raw bacon or peanut butter makes good bait for a mousetrap. Make sure a mouse will have to tug the trap to remove the bait. If you’re using peanut butter, dab some on the triggering device and let it harden before setting the trap. If bacon is your bait, tie it around the triggering device.
    • If a raccoon sets up housekeeping in your attic or chimney, chemical repellants such as oil of mustard, are temporarily effective. (The smell may bother you as much as it does the raccoon.) Your best bet is to let the animal leave, and then cover its entrance hole with wire mesh so that it cannot return.
    • To keep rodents out of your house, seal every opening they could squeeze through. Some need less than 1/4 inch of space. Put poison in deep cracks or holes, and stuff them with steel wool or scouring pads pushed in with a screwdriver. Close the spaces with spackling compound mixed with steel wool fragments.

    Insects:

    • If your home becomes infested with fleas, vacuum rugs thoroughly before spraying, and throw the dust bag out at once.
    • Keep ants away from your home with a concoction of borax and sugar. Mix 1 cup sugar and 1 cup borax in a quart jar. Punch holes in the jar’s lid, and sprinkle the mixture outdoors around the foundation of your home and around the baseboards inside your house. The ants are attracted by the sugar and poisoned by the borax.
    • If you have cockroaches, sprinkle borax powder in the kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Avoid sprinkling where children and pets could be affected.

If you have a problem with rats and mice getting into your home, you will want to read further!

If mice and rats seem to keep making themselves at home where you live, chances are they are getting in through these entry ways:

    1. Holes in the wall – search for any gaps around anything that passes through your walls such as plumbing, AC lines, gas lines, phone and TV cables and exhaust vents. Gaps in siding and around the trim of your home are another place small pests will get in.
    2. Holes in screens – look for any torn screens or worn out weather stripping that will provide a big enough entryway for any type of pest. Make sure the rubber weather stripping under your garage door seals tightly to the floor. This is a perfect way for mice and rats to make their way in.
    3. Basements, garages and attics – on a sunny day, peek your head into any of these rooms and look for light peeking into the dark room through any holes. A heavy concentration of cobwebs indoors will also indicate an entry point.
    4. Wood piles or bushes – Anything that is outside and is touching your home is a great way for rats and mice to make their way to your home easily. Trim back your branches and store your firewood away from the side of your house.
    5. Roof vents – a missing or chewed through screen on a roof vent will let all sorts of rodents into your home.

Remember if you have a pest infestation in your home and they start to die, make sure to use Clear The Air Dead Rodent Odor Eliminator!

  • 7 Must Know Tips For Bird Owners

    Posted on September 13th, 2013

Are you a first time bird owner?

Even if you’ve had birds all your life, the following tips are helpful to all bird owners:

    • Before bringing your bird home, you will want to make sure you purchase a large well-constructed cage.  No matter the species, it is important for your bird to have enough room to stretch his wings and fly short distances.  Horizontal bars and perches need to also be installed in your cage at varying heights.
    • Line the bottom of the cage with plain paper or paper bags that are cut to size and make sure it is changed daily.  We recommend sprinkling Clear The Air at the bottom of your bird cage to keep odors away.  Place your bird’s cage in a warm, bright part of the house off the floor that is close to where the action is but away from drafts and direct sunlight.  Make sure your bird is not close to the kitchen as they are extremely sensitive to fumes from ovens, cookware and such.
    • When it comes to feeding your bird, pelleted food is the way to go.  While seed mixes provide variety, they do not always provide the best nutrition. Fresh veggies and fruits should be given to your bird every day.  Dark, leafy greens are packed with vitamins and many birds also enjoy carrots and broccoli.  Fresh cold water should also be available at all times and changed at least once a day.
    • A trained and tamed bird will need at least an hour of exercise out of the cage in a safe and enclosed room every day.  He may simply want to just sit on your shoulder or explore the room.  For birds that do not take to handling, providing a selection of toys like ladders, swings and mirrors with bells are a great way to keep your bird entertained.
    • Providing a shallow dish at the bottom of the cage is a great way to provide a bath for your bird and keeping his plumage looking perfect.  It is probably a good idea to schedule a bath right before you plan to clean out the cage.
